because the last post was two months ago, i shall write the first post of 2009 (= at an ungodly time of 547 am because i can't get to sleep. yes i remember the times, zhaoqi, when u were in oxford and you'd chase me to bed on msn but to no avail. eventually you said if you don't want to then there's nothing i can do. and i called you huang lian po! hahaha. but i can't imagine you as one... with 披头散发 and oversized(urm because singaporean kids are too well-fed nowadays) kids in tow. hee hee hee.

anyway glad we are meeting up once more... a friend of mine (haha zhaoqi it's shuang han) said that we meet up super often for jc friends and for the umpteenth time, i'm thankful for u guys(: for accepting me (most of the time, except when i laugh, oops), treating me as one of you and yah...being here for me earlier last year:) like i said before, i think in the mess that was hwachong, you guys were the best thing that happened to me. awww haha.

i hope all's going well with everyone. happy that we had a complete gathering for christmas, for everyone to be goofing around when we were taking photos (i cant believe tere did the delivery pose hahahhaah) and somehow i remember how happy everyone looked in last year's new year gathering at zhigao's place. the photos were so heartwarming(: love u guys k.

really glad also that those who are overseas (in general lah, all the jc friends and random people) have finished their degrees and come back(well mostly)...

im rambling i should go to bed but not sleepy leh.. church in awhile -_______-

i saw this hilarious 30kg 70kg photo biyun made of herself.. i dunno why she's so good at all these weird things. and the same time the word 'fish arm' comes to mind. i was talking to evil man lately and he went to china for a wushu competition. woah i admire people who have such passion for a sport they can stay in it for decades. what is ba gua zhang anyway?

anyways, hope you feel better and get well soon ok mr Lbird (apparently that's what some people call you on your blog eh!)..was thinking how people you know now still say you are lame.. well good to know that you are spreading your lameness and bringing laughter to those around you.. we need plenty of such people (ok maybe not so much lameness!) in this world to counteract the sadness and grief!

olympics 2008 rockssss! :D today i watched women's gymnastics on mobtv, woah they put up a great show (= i've so many random things to say about school i wonder if i should be rambling here in detail.

aiya heck la anyway zhaoqi says this place is conducive for rambling or something to that effect.

speaking of zhaoqi, i have this hilarious memory to recount.

i remember this time when we were studying for promos on friday outside the wushu room, and zhaoqi went home early.. shortly after that, she smsed us saying she washed her face with shampoo or something... hahahahahhahaha.

and this other time, everyone was talking about chemistry lecture test or something. and dunno who issit lixiang or what said the most common MCQ answer is B.. so there was once yanlian said, "oh i couldn't finish my test so i remembered what xxx said and put B, B, B all the way for all the remaining questions...."

i remember using this tactic before, am not sure if it works! i guess it's hwachong specific.

oh yes, i've been losing my water bottles in school, and the other day i lost my hwachong orientation package water bottle. was a little sad, because it has 纪念价值, 收藏了这么多年. and it's kinda nice, with a rugby ball picture..

oh and to go into more inane things, i found out today that the school library has a stapling station for notes that are printed! and i was happily stapling my stack of notes with what my friends called the "industrial sized staplers".. and i told them how happy i was that i can now staple my thick stack of readings together when i could not in the past.

more ramblings.. i find two hour lectures hard to stomach, even with a break at the 1 hour mark. i guess i've to get used to it, and it's even worse at 830 in the morning when i have to crawl out of bed at 630 am like we used to in jc or sec school.

i am getting more and more pimples but too lazy to wear any makeup to hide it, every spare moment goes into sleeping/slacking/trying to do a reading/other stuff/parking myself at the module registration website to scavenge for dropped electives that i can pick up and discard my lousy ones.. seriously lixiang, pls teach me some tips to succeed at the fastest fingers game every semester!

i had this science module titled "symmetry and crystals" which required one to visualize symmetry and dunno what chemistry stuff.. the assessment is quite good - only online lectures, online tutorials, 4 MCQ tests making up 100% to be done online.. i even entertained the thought of getting a chemistry major to do those tests for me, but i decided against it because it was unethical and i don't think God will be very happy with me for doing something like that so >.< i dropped the subject and ended up with no science elective.

ahhh, isn't university life interesting!

haha, but i really do like my classes, and appreciate the friends i have from poly because they're the only people i hang out with. i haven't been able to talk to much people except the people sitting next to me in my electives and yay i'm taking french this sem...hope to be able to pick it up well and do well in it.. haha.. and learn a new language every semester. that would be nice!

i've gotten quite a no. of exemptions so it's really nice, i only have about 3 year 1 modules to clear next semester to go on to year 2.. and this semester, i'm doing year 2 cores with my poly friends already so yay :D company + credits cleared. haha.

and i want to go for exchange! it seems mighty fun.

oh lixiang i saw a guy wearing a "thailand cheerleading dunno what" shirt today and i wondered if you know each other!

anyway you are graduating next year, so fast, haiz, sadded.. i'm the only poor (as in not making any financial profit from my labour hahahahah) student left in singapore. with all the medical students raring to go... earn big bucks. hahhaa.

but lately i realized that medicine is not that glamourous a profession after seeing more of it and thinking about it. they have to be really humble and see all the blood and gore... it's not easy money. and it's mentally, physically and emotionally exhausting i guess.

so i really respect them. haha.

okay i am so rambly.. i hope i can come up with so much crap during exams.. speaking of which i have back to back exams, with two exams on the same day :( wish me luck a few months from now!

anyway, today or issit yesterday i was thinking about this really kind but understated gesture that i raelly appreciated. that was the time when we had a gathering at zhigao's house. what's her name erm oh eunice asked how come she doesn't see me in school when i'm in NTU too, and Biyun said, yanlian is in NUS too but we also don't see each other what. maybe it's just an offhand comment, but i really appreciate how you guys didn't tell her that i wasn't in school/on leave etc, and just made a simple comment, letting it pass. this is the kind of sweet, understated and simple kindness that i appreciate so much in friends. (:

okay why i am rambling from like north to south and everything.. i'd better get back to slacking. it's friday. no student in his/her right mind would study on friday unless he has an exam coming. and i'm gonna PLAY and get my well-needed/deserved rest, and start doing my work (sobs) tmr!

was talking to glendon the other day on MSN and reminisced a little about hc wushu.. apparently they (as in current batches) don't have what we have anymore..shrugs. and i just felt happy that so many years from then, we're still in touch and considered pretty good friends. i remember this time during cny when biyun said she rejected a hot date because "you guys have higher priority". that was aww-so-sweet, but when i thought about it, i'd also pick an outing w you guys over other outings lor....not that i'd have any dates, hot or not, since i see a grumpy pimply face in the mirror every morning before i travel to ulu pandan for class..and i'm really thankful for the bonds built, the strength of our friendship, our diversity, and how much fun we always have. (= lurveeeeeeeee wushu 29th :)

and lixiang i want to scold you lor... why you tell glendon stuff about electives never tell me.. i know nothing sia.. and i never see you around school haha duh... please come for our meetups soon, we haven't seen you since yanlian's birthday :)

finally forced myself to overcome the inertia to blog heh

i'm back to slack student life!! for all of 5 months (including exams, unfortunately). not as slack as the dipsing course was, but definitely more slack than having to be in the office 9-indefinite time. admittedly the 5 weeks of work didn't give me cause for complaint - aside from occasional late nighters and frequent brainless work (though not having to use brains can be a luxury haha), on the whole it was a fun experience - people are generally nice, office facilities are good (aside from the excruciatingly slow lifts), plenty of friends in the vicinity to lunch with etc. and paycheck!!! albeit it isnt alot of money, but then i'm in no position to scoff at any influx of cash haha.

much as i bemoan no longer being able to wake up late and head down to orchard for morning pre-crowds shopping, i actually quite look forward to starting work proper - at least i won't be stagnating, will be earning $$ and will get to meet people on a regular basis. having said that, i'm going to enjoy my last 5 months of student life whilst i still can!!

yanlian hope you're adapting well to working life! and don't tire yourself out, what with trainings and all! though at least you'll have those enviable biceps to flex, in comparison to ours which have turned into mush (speaking for myself at least!)

looking forward to next week's gathering! though trying to get lixiang to confirm whether or not he can make it on the 21st mon. if he can't we'll stick to the 22nd, if thats ok with you guys - i end at 8pm on mon and 7 or 730 on tues, so tues would be better for me, and for some reason zhiyong is very anxious that we hold it on tues. tentative plan is to have pizza at this place near turf club? given its a weekday don't think we'll be able to potluck - we'll shelf our dumpling making etc plans for another time k! which brings to mind our gingerbread house plans for xmas this year haha, fingers crossed that it'll materialize

Haha, here's a little update on my work (i'm recycling it in my own blog)

Today, Willy, a fellow NUS graduate and new employee, showed my slides and documents on his project. I thought they were very helpful in understanding the project, which was a scaled down version of mine. So, I was very happy to catch my extremely busy and elusive ang moh boss.

"Stuart!"
"What do you want now?" trying unsuccessfully to squeeze his lanky frame into inconspicuousness
"Willy has been showing me things!" innocently and excitedly
"WHAT has Willy been showing you?" looking at Willy in pseudo horror

Willy anxiously showed Stuart the information he showed me earlier. Only much later did I realize Stuart purposely misinterpreted my words. It was all rather humorous, albeit in a cheeky way. There were other cheeky jokes, hugs from me to Alex or Stuart... Bryan with his many shirt buttons down...

But I think I shall always retain a little childishness and innocence despite all these corruptive influences!

i got a fever when i was supposed to go ecp to cycle with my sis on vesak day.

today is my 2nd day of flu :(

anyway i'm going shoppingggg today with my sis for black pants (i grew out of all of mine and dumped them to my sister) and a long sleeved white shirt for my graduation next week.

tonight i am sleepless again and my thoughts turned sombre, unbecoming and dark like the clouds outside my window right now. and i am thankful that at 2 am in the morning, i can drop a jc friend (lixiang) a sms to ask, "Hi. :) Do you happen to be awake at this hour?" and receive an (almost) immediate reply.

tonight, i will just sit out the rest of the two hours before i go to church at 7 plus am, and think of happy things, and remember that my life is precious not only to God, but also to friends like you guys who genuinely love(d) and care(d) for me. :)

more updates from my bamboo plant...

managed to sneak up to the nest while the parents were away...to take some horrible photos while balancing precariously on a stool.. eh i couldn't even see wad im taking...juz held the cam near the nest and kept clicking away randomly..

Photo 5: leaf-clearing attempt near the nest...since the chicks' eyes havnt opened yet, they thought the pressures exerted by my hand on the branches were their parents landing...and they popped out to beg for food...
did they change colour or what...turned bright red.. :p

i read from my textbook that (for another species) the red colour lining on the beaks of begging chicks will induce the parent to feed them.. okayy...so for this species the whole body turns red?? hahah...

Photo 6: the closest pic i could take without any leaves blocking the inside of the nest...unfortunately one of the parents came back at this time and started fluttering around frantically...

im sorry... :( won't go near your nest again...
should have left and waited for the next round of feeding before coming back...

Some possible consequences predicted by me for causing undue stress to the parents:
1) Parents may abandon the nest (after this round of breeding..since they are still there now)
2) Reduced food for both nestlings and adults if the parents were to increase vigilance/protection by staying in the nest for longer periods of time (sian..ok ok my fault)
3) Parents will attack the stupid ape the next time the stupid ape is spotted (oh no!!!)

Photo 7: the closest i could get without the adult flying away...can see the white-eye ring..too bad can't distinguish the colours from there

My mum pointed out the white fluff used for building the nest and wondered where the birds took all the cotton wool from..i told her they pulled everything from the carpet that we placed on our doorstep..hahah
they should be cobwebs lah...interesting huh...wonder which neighbour didnt clean their house :p

the sad thing is...i think one of the birds may get pushed out of the nest before it fledges..most prob the one on the left in photo 5.. i read from other accounts that the nest may be too small to contain all the chicks (this nest only 5-6 cm in diameter) and chicks can get pushed out before they can fly properly...

most of the food will go to the strongest/noisiest/most conspicuous beggar (the extreme right chick in photo 5) since it has the highest chance of surviving later. No point wasting energy and food on a weak sickly chick..Seems like the weakest is the one on the left in photo 5..

So the parents are in fact practising infanticide..albeit a slow one by hastening the death of the weaker chicks....
hope i dun see any chicks lying on the ground over the next few days..

apparently the bird nesting in my plant is some sort of a white-eye. I suspect it's the oriental white-eye...which according to some birdy blog was labelled extinct in singapore since the 1970s. the blog also had a record of this bird in 2006 (or was it 2007) dubbed as the first nesting record since the 1970s (so does that make mine the second? :P)

the chicks in the nest hatched liao...think there are 2 or 3..havnt got close enough to observe...and i need a ladder..and it's the first time i saw both parents at the same time (they were taking turns feeding the chicks)

everytime the parents landed near the nest the chicks will stick out their orange heads and beg for food. and everytime i sneak near them they will hide -.-
i've been spying on them using my binoculars as well...hope my neighbours opposite dun call the police thinking that im peeping through their toilet windows...

i just had the most relaxing exam ever. even the mock exams i had over the last three years were somewhat more stressful haha. now to hope i don't fail, else i'll have to eat my words.

played table tennis just now. waah reminded me of zhigao and mingjian playing badminton with me and biyun outside LT5 in JC. they'll just stand there and hit left and right, making biyun and i run like mad (and sweat like mad) while they remain clean, dry and sweat-less. humph!!!

i played badminton the other day and it was lots of fun. Missed Chinese painting class this morning because I overslept. Been having trouble sleeping. =X

haha yeah the blog is very stagnant, have been intending to post, but never got around to doing so ;p plus now with everyone on facebook, all the photos are there not much point in double posting.

got back from india this morning! was a pretty amazing experience, though can be succinctly summed up as sun, dirt, dust, indian food and taj mahal haha. and lots of (very effective) anti-diarrahoea medicine. we stayed in the middle of the main bazaar, one of the "inns" in some smelly dirty flies-infested back lane haha. but at least the room was clean. think i didn't really get darker, thanks to the SPF 80 sunscreen my mom bought ;p

uhh i'm lazy to write any more ;p let's meet up again soon!! lunch next sat or sun maybe? now that yanlian's back! is junyuan back yet??

was going to spam the tagboard cos i was too lazy to log in, but then i didn't want to interrupt the stimulating intellectual exchange that biyun and lixiang have underway haha. and anyway its breather time in the middle of exam week(s), so well.

had papers the entire week, mon to sat (yes, saturday!), am very very very glad to be able to have sat evening off. well, partly off technically, since i should get started on my reading for monday's paper soon. but i'm feeling sooo lazy; what i'll give for exams to be over like, now. am glad next week is just three papers, and spaced apart - mon, wed, fri; though perhaps it'll be nice to just get them over and done with. then again, i really don't think i can take anymore cramming.

time really flies though, to think a month or two back i was like, die how finals coming, will i be able to survive?? and now i'm 2/3 way through, not to mention 3 years of overseas study is almost over. and admittedly now that it's almost over, the whole experience wasn't that bad. perhaps because i'm not pushing to get a first, am content with getting second-upper, as long as its a decent-ish second upper. and admittedly i haven't really been working very hard - slipshod studying, innumerable breaks, immense lack of concentration. given all that am thankful papers have gone well so far (or at least, i think they have, may turn out to be otherwise when i get my results back), in the sense that i've managed to complete the mandatory 4 questions on each paper - if you don't finish the paper they shortweight the entire paper i.e. reduce your overrall mark by a certain percentage, which essentially means can forget about getting a second-upper even.

haha okay sorry for rambling on about exams, its hardly the most exciting topic of conversation around. am really looking forward to post-finals and to being back in spore for good, although possibly i might start to get bored haha. but then there'll be you guys to be around - hopefully everyone won't be too busy! and am sooo looking forward to my xiaolongbao and bak chor mee and hokkien mee ahhh. (which reminds me, huijun still owes me fish beehoon or something. haha.)

i HATE group projects where your partners couldn't care less...or worse still pretends he knows everything and tries to order people around but doesn't do anything himself.

i HATE pair-work projects where your partner couldn't care less and anyhow writes her part, even getting simple facts wrong and you have to write the whole bloody report YOURSELF.

i cooked century egg porridge!

which actually tasted decent-ish. i was so excited at the prospect of attempting to cook porridge, which i'd always been afraid to try because it seemed so difficult - its easy to cook rice in lots of water, but not so easy to ensure it doesn't taste like, well, rice in lots of water.
